Aromas: pleasantly fruity with a delicate touch of bitterness reminiscent of wild cherry and blackcurrant, dark chocolate, fine herbs and slightly ethereal notes

The 2020 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant'Urbano seduces with a savory and darkly alluring blend of dried black cherries, mentholated herbs, clove and shavings of citrus-laced dark chocolate. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk, showcasing stunning minerality as crisp red berry fruits cascade across a core of stimulating acidity. It finishes incredibly long, leaving a salty flourish and a bitter cocoa twang as grippy tannins frame the experience beautifully. The 2020 possesses an incredibly classic feel.

  •  54,50 NO VAT (private collection) Bright ruby red with a violet tinge. Candied violets on the palate, distinct floral nuances, as well as cherries, peaches, and background notes of cinnamon. Tremendously juicy tannins, displaying a lot of fruit suppleness and structure on the palate, evolving gradually into multiple layers, with reverberations. Excellent ageing potential.Add to cart
  •  55,00 NO VAT (private collection) This vintage is a bit closed on the nose at a young age, it needs to breathe in the glass to reach its rich aromatic complexity. It recalls the Mediterranean scrub and its essences, strawberry tree, juniper but also earthy and humus notes. Its complex nuances identify its belonging to the terroir of origin. In the mouth the tannins are perfectly integrated, and their maturity accompanies the natural length of the wine on the palate, where freshness and depth stay in the foreground. Excellent salinity, not intrusive, which gives good length and persistence to the nose.Add to cart

As usual, Molitor’s exclusively small-barrel-raised “three-star” Pinot Blanc introduces some overt notes of oak on the nose and slight stiffening and drying to this variety’s usual engaging combination of textural creaminess with refreshment. But it still harbors plenty of interest. Musky suggestions of narcissus mingle with scents of corn shoots, lime peel and bruised apple skin. Fuller than its two ostensibly lesser counterparts but by no means heavy, this offers a cooling midpalate suggestion of mint-laced apple and lime sorbet, leading to a lingering if slightly woody finish enhanced by saliva-inducing salinity.

The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows the added weight and tannic heft of Serralunga (vis-à-vis the straight Barolo), but it too is done in a mid-weight style that requires minimal cellaring. Iron, smoke, sage, mint and a host of feral nuances are laced into a core of dark fruit. There is plenty of character here, that much is evident. The Comune is a blend of six parcels in town.

A classic vintage for Barolo, 2019 is a Barolo with a very strong and austere structure, wines with great aging potential that will give us some of the best bottles of this denomination in the future. Pressenda, one of the most suitable vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, is characterized by the elegance and intensity of its aromas. Ruby red color with garnet reflections in the glass, intense aromas of balsamic herbs, undergrowth and berries on the nose, on the palate firm tannin but enveloping and very ripe, very vertical and elegant texture.

"The 2019 Barolo Pressenda unfolds in the glass with dark red cherry, menthol, licorice, rose petal, mint, sweet spice and orange peel. Firm tannins are pretty forbidding at this stage, but that should be less of an issue with bottle age. This opens nicely with time in the glass."

The 2018 Phélan Ségur appears to have lost the green edge that I observed from barrel, now coming across fresh with blackberry, seaweed and light sea spray scents. It gently unfurls with aeration, though never slips into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, just a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit and a cohesive, slightly peppery finish. This is a deftly crafted Phélan Ségur that will benefit from 3–4 years in bottle.

The 2016 Barolo Arborina is powerful and tightly wound, with explosive energy that is just waiting to fully emerge. Readers will find an especially rich, potent expression of this Arborina site. Black cherry, violet, lavender and spice add to a real sense of gravitas. The 2016 needs time in bottle to be at its best, but it has terrific freshness and persistence. The significant presence of clay in this portion of Arborina contributes to the wine's size. This is such a gorgeous wine.

Tasting notes: 2019 Barolos come with a very strong and austere structure; they’re wines with great aging potential that can give us among the best bottles of this denomination in the future.

Our "Cerviano-Merli" stands out for its richness and longevity, with an imposing structure and complexity of aromas. This thanks to the

soils mainly clay and limestone of this cru of Novello. Fruits of mature woods, musk and balsamic herbs to the nose, precede a palate made of power, austere tannins and elegance typical of great Barolo. The best for this wine will come in 3-4 years, with an aging potential that also looks to the next 20-30 years

"The 2019 Barolo Cerviano-Merli is a dark, layered wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, cloves and gravel are some of the many notes that take shape in this dynamic, layered Barolo. Give this a few years to soften."

60,00 INC. VAT It has a ruby red color, with garnet reflections. On the nose it expresses a very intense, complex and majestic bouquet. The typical hints of red fruit in spirit such as black cherry and cherry are preserved in alcohol. Complete with tertiary hints of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is soft and silky with a long persistence. The strength of this wine lies in the elegant and clean finish which gives finesse to a wine with great evolution and aging capacity.Add to cart
  •  62,00 NO VAT (private collection) TASTING NOTES: A Barolo with a notable structure that is slower to reveal its ample aromas due to its cultivation in soils with very little sand. For this reason, it is aged in the cellar for four years. Develops notes of dark tobacco, blueberry, licorice, and a mineral base. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is youthfully inward and darkly floral with an herbal tinge and hints of crushed ashen stone that give way to vivid black raspberry and exotic spice. This is juicy and spry, with racy cherry-berry fruit and stimulating acidity that creates a sensation of boundless energy, even as a saturation of primary concentration settles in toward the close. The 2019 finishes with incredible length and youthful tension, leaving balsamic spice, sage and licorice notes lingering over a bed of dusty tannins.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is coy in the glass, slowly evolving with vivid black cherries, mentholated herbs and hints of cooling mint. This is silky and sleek, quite feminine in character and shows tremendous depth. It holds its power in reserve as a coating of chalky red and blue-toned fruits slowly saturates. This finishes long and youthfully tense with dusty tannins and minerals that mingle through the finale. The potential here is high, yet patience will be required.

The 2021 Pinots Furstentum Grand Cru is made from about 60% Pinot Gris; the rest is from an adjoining block that is a field blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois; all are co-fermented and aged in small barrels with 20% new oak. The vines are around 40 years old. The nose is vivid with green and yellow pear alongside fresh, ripe lemon - all embraced by a subtle creaminess of oak. The fine texture reminds of citrus pith; while the body is generous and concentrated, there is freshness. (Bone-dry)

The 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is very pretty in 2016. Medium in body and supple, the Bricco Ambrogio captures all of the personality of the year in a mid-weight style that makes it easy to drink and enjoy young. The balance of fruit, acid and structure is just superb here. Pretty floral and spice overtones add nuance. Bricco Ambrogio is always the most accessible of the Scavino cru Barolos. The 2016 is the finest wine from this site yet.

The 2016 Barolo Vigneto Garretti is bold, racy and super-expressive. Succulent dark cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, red flowers, licorice, and French oak all meld together in this creamy, racy wine from La Spinetta. The Garretti captures all of the richness and pedigree of the year in a forward, succulent style that is sure to find many admirers. This is an especially strong vintage for this wine, though it needs another year in bottle for the big tannins to soften. I won't be surprised if the 2016 turns out to be even better than this note suggests; today it is absolutely delicious.

The 2021 Gewurztraminer Furstentum Grand Cru opens with peach compote and trails vestiges of passion fruit. The palate is sweet with Mirabelle jelly, almost creamy. This seems to have an internal combustion engine putting out peach, puffing away, letting out bursts of lemon and rose, but coming to concentrated, orange zest and peach skin finish that is just so taut and bright. The 47 g/L of residual sweetness is a fact, and the wine itself is alchemy. I have to borrow Catherine Faller’s architectural simile, noting that this wine "starts Baroque but finishes Gothic."
