The 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superiore pulls the taster close to the glass with a darkly alluring blend of dried roses, violets, crushed stone, clove and blood orange. It washes across the palate with silken textures, lifted and finessed in the style of the vintage, as ripe wildberry fruits swirl beneath an air of sweet lavender. The word ethereal comes to mind as the 2018 tapers off with sweet tannins that provide a lovely framework to perfumed inner florals and hints of blackberry that resonate.

€ 98,00 INC. VATThe 2019 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is a potent wine. The more floral, savory side of Rocche dell'Annunziata comes through in a deep, virile Barolo that drinks well today. As always, there's a bit more new oak in the Rocche than in the other Barolos because of the small size of Veglio's parcel.Antonio Galloni. The 2016 Barolo Pajana is ample, powerful and resonant, with terrific body and a real sense of expansiveness that builds with time in the glass. Sweet spice, citrus and floral overtones add brightness to this attractive, mid-weight Barolo. The 2016 is deep and yet also tannic. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years.

Here, too, ripe stone fruit, pineapple and a number of exotic aromas are shown. Typically Molitor, the selection shows a playful acidity, which is in an elegant harmony with the sweetness. The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a serious, somber wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol show off the darker side of Nebbiolo to great effect. In most vintages, Rio Sordo is an easygoing wine, but not in 2016. Readers will find a potent, brooding yet mid-weight Barbaresco that screams with character. What a way to start this tasting!

The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota continues this tasting of frankly awe-inspiring wines. Rich, deep and super-expressive, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice emerge, but only with great reluctance. The Muncagota is another wine in this range that clearly needs time.

€ 79,00 INC. VATThe 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is airy and fresh, cascading from the glass with dusty rose and violet tones before giving way to dried strawberries and hints of cinnamon spice. It sweeps across the palate with the silkiest textures, seamless and round, with a polished feel as saline minerals add traction to its ripe red berry fruits. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length while maintaining refinement and grace. Classically formed tannins add the perfect punctuation to this wonderfully balanced experience.Eric Guido. The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a brooding wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers add a feral, earthy quality that is so appealing. Pora is often one of the more approachable Riservas in this range, but the 2016 is an exception. Readers should be prepared to cellar it for at least a few years.

Golden yellow. Rich bouquet of baked apple, vanilla custard and clove, with a complicating note of spicy botrytis. Creamy but refined tropical fruits are complemented by refreshing salts and toasted pine nuts. At once succulent and full, finishing with reverberating length but not quite the same degree of elegance as the finest auslese.

The 2016 Barolo Vigneto Garretti is bold, racy and super-expressive. Succulent dark cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, red flowers, licorice, and French oak all meld together in this creamy, racy wine from La Spinetta. The Garretti captures all of the richness and pedigree of the year in a forward, succulent style that is sure to find many admirers. This is an especially strong vintage for this wine, though it needs another year in bottle for the big tannins to soften. I won't be surprised if the 2016 turns out to be even better than this note suggests; today it is absolutely delicious.

The 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is very pretty in 2016. Medium in body and supple, the Bricco Ambrogio captures all of the personality of the year in a mid-weight style that makes it easy to drink and enjoy young. The balance of fruit, acid and structure is just superb here. Pretty floral and spice overtones add nuance. Bricco Ambrogio is always the most accessible of the Scavino cru Barolos. The 2016 is the finest wine from this site yet.

The highly expressive 2018 Mille e Una Notte entices with a wild blend of blackberry, graphite, blood orange pith and tobacco. Silken in feel yet lifted and energetic, it offers crisp red and black fruits driven by a core of nervous acidity. Savory herbal tones swirl throughout, and the finish brings a cascade of minerals and spices. Only gently tannic, it leaves a sour cherry resonance to linger. The cool 2018 vintage is already showing incredibly well, with an almost old-school Bordeaux character that I find wildly attractive.

Tasting notes: 2019 Barolos come with a very strong and austere structure; they’re wines with great aging potential that can give us among the best bottles of this denomination in the future.
Our "Cerviano-Merli" stands out for its richness and longevity, with an imposing structure and complexity of aromas. This thanks to the
soils mainly clay and limestone of this cru of Novello. Fruits of mature woods, musk and balsamic herbs to the nose, precede a palate made of power, austere tannins and elegance typical of great Barolo. The best for this wine will come in 3-4 years, with an aging potential that also looks to the next 20-30 years
"The 2019 Barolo Cerviano-Merli is a dark, layered wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, cloves and gravel are some of the many notes that take shape in this dynamic, layered Barolo. Give this a few years to soften."

€ 58,00 INC. VATA classic vintage for Barolo, 2019 is a Barolo with a very strong and austere structure, wines with great aging potential that will give us some of the best bottles of this denomination in the future. Pressenda, one of the most suitable vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, is characterized by the elegance and intensity of its aromas. Ruby red color with garnet reflections in the glass, intense aromas of balsamic herbs, undergrowth and berries on the nose, on the palate firm tannin but enveloping and very ripe, very vertical and elegant texture.
"The 2019 Barolo Pressenda unfolds in the glass with dark red cherry, menthol, licorice, rose petal, mint, sweet spice and orange peel. Firm tannins are pretty forbidding at this stage, but that should be less of an issue with bottle age. This opens nicely with time in the glass."

Mouth-filling tannins, excellent persistence on the palate.

As usual, Molitor’s exclusively small-barrel-raised “three-star” Pinot Blanc introduces some overt notes of oak on the nose and slight stiffening and drying to this variety’s usual engaging combination of textural creaminess with refreshment. But it still harbors plenty of interest. Musky suggestions of narcissus mingle with scents of corn shoots, lime peel and bruised apple skin. Fuller than its two ostensibly lesser counterparts but by no means heavy, this offers a cooling midpalate suggestion of mint-laced apple and lime sorbet, leading to a lingering if slightly woody finish enhanced by saliva-inducing salinity.
