Manfred Ing and his team at Querciabella presented a terrific set of wines. The move towards greater energy and vibrancy that started a handful of years ago is evident. It’s hard to know where to start, as all of these wines are deserving of a mention. The Mongrana is a superb value, while at the top end, the 2016 Camartina really dazzles. But if I were going to start out with just one wine to explore the estate, it would be the Chianti Classico, a model of understatement and elegance.

The 2018 Batàr is perfumed and gracious, with lovely orchard fruit, chamomile and floral notes that lift effortlessly from the glass. A wine of total precision and nuance, the 2018 is simply exquisite today. Stylistically it is a bit more perfumed and lighter than is the norm.

VATAs usual, Molitor’s exclusively small-barrel-raised “three-star” Pinot Blanc introduces some overt notes of oak on the nose and slight stiffening and drying to this variety’s usual engaging combination of textural creaminess with refreshment. € 29,00 NO VAT (private collection) The Pinner dazzles with its pink-tinged, golden-amber color and bouquet of dusty dried flowers, young mango and crushed stone. There are depths of silky textures here, carried across a medium-bodied frame while neatly contrasted by zesty acids and minerals. Ripe orchard fruits and cooling herbal tones resonate from start to finish, yet the end note here is lip-smacking sour tropical citrus. The Pinner is a varietal Pinot Noir, but not technically a Rosé, which takes its color from spending nine months sur lie in stainless steel with daily bâtonnage. - Eric Guid0- By Vinous on May 2021

€ 74,00 NO VAT (private collection)The 2021 Gewurztraminer Furstentum Grand Cru opens with peach compote and trails vestiges of passion fruit. The palate is sweet with Mirabelle jelly, almost creamy. This seems to have an internal combustion engine putting out peach, puffing away, letting out bursts of lemon and rose, but coming to concentrated, orange zest and peach skin finish that is just so taut and bright. The 47 g/L of residual sweetness is a fact, and the wine itself is alchemy. I have to borrow Catherine Faller’s architectural simile, noting that this wine "starts Baroque but finishes Gothic."
