This is an absolutely fabulous collection of Barolos from the Scavino family. In recent years, the Scavinos have expanded their enviable portfolio of holdings with acquisitions in Monvigliero, Ravera and Prapò, along with other parcels that currently are not bottled separately, but used for the straight Barolo. Two thousand sixteen is the first vintage in which oak vats were introduced for fermentation. The Ravera, in which one of two fermentation vats was oak, provides some clues as to what that might hold for the future. Most of the Barolos are aged in a combination of small and large oak, a choice driven largely by practical considerations of managing volume, but those aged in cask have a degree of transparency that is really exciting, especially given the quality of these vineyards in an exceptional vintage. Scavino fans can also look forward to a Riserva along the lines of the 2011 Barolo Riserva Novantesimo as well as a Riserva from Rocche dell’Annunziata. After a few years of some inconsistency, the 2016s suggest Scavino is back big time. These Barolos are compelling.

Scavino’s 2016 Barolo Ravera is another highlight in this range. Tense, brilliant and finely sculpted, the 2016 has so much going on. Crushed flowers, iron, mint and cedar add beguiling aromatic breadth to a core of translucent, intense Nebbiolo fruit. The 2016 really captures the energy that makes wines from this site so distinctive. The 2016 was fermented in stainless steel and aged entirely in cask.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but there is no question the 2016 represents a pretty significant stylistic shift from the past for this bottling. Whether that is unique to the 2016 or an approach that will carry through in coming vintages remains to be seen. Objectively the 2016 feels a bit clenched and lacking the inner sweetness the Riserva has shown in the past. Crushed flowers, mint, rose petal, sweet red cherry and orange zest lend nuance to this taut, classically austere young Barolo from Scavino.

Dried red cherry, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice are all nicely lifted in this sublime, delicate Barolo. All the elements fall into place so effortlessly. The 2018 naturally does not have the body of more important years, but it offers tons of persistence and fine balance. It has closed down quite a bit since I first tasted it a few months ago, which is probably a good sign. An opened bottle just got better and better over time.

Highly perfumed, mineral-tinged aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, smoky bacon, olive paste and incense, along with suggestions of woodsmoke and exotic spices. Offers palate-staining, appealingly sweet and deeply concentrated blueberry, cassis, floral pastille, smoked meat, licorice and fruitcake flavors that show excellent concentration and are supported by a core of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, broad and extremely long, with resonating florality and chewy tannins that build steadily.

Waves of flavour come at you, from crushed raspberries, pomegrante and blackcurrant to fresher redcurrant and lemongrass set against richer truffles, crayon and smoked earth. Mouthwatering, this really is a vintage where you can see the impact of the biodynamic vineyard work, with a greater sense of sculpting and violet florality than you would have found in this Pauillac powerhouse a decade earlier, without sacrificing structure and depth. As it opens, the sweetness of a ripe vintage comes through in edges of smoked caramel. A beautiful wine, thoroughly enjoyable, extremely well-handled and set to power through the decades.
