Mastrojanni is going through positive changes. Last year, Francesco Illy, also owner of Podere Le Ripi, acquired the winery in total. Today’s Mastrojanni is looking to the future with its 110 hectares located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, most of which are woodlands that have been left untouched. Forty of those hectares are contiguous plantings located around the winery. The vineyards range from 195 to 400 meters, mostly on clay and stone soils. The exception is Vigna Loreto, which grows on silty sand and river stones once left by the Ocria River. Besides nursing their olive groves back to health, the team at Mastrojanni focuses on biodiversity and biodynamics. This year’s visit included a tasting of both the 2016s and the soon-to-be-released 2019s. Frankly, I didn’t expect the 2019s to outdo the 2016s, yet the Vigna Schiena d’Asino is absolutely glorious, as is the Vigna Loreto. If anything, I have to question why the estate Brunello, which is a solid and well-balanced wine, doesn’t perform at a slightly higher level. In the end, Mastrojanni remains a testament to the importance of Castelnuovo dell’Abate for Montalcino.

Blackberries, menthol, sage, stone dust and cloves define the youthfully restrained 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto. This flows across the palate with ease, silky with depths of ripe raspberry and sour cherry as fine-grained tannins saturate toward the close. It finishes spicy and long, structured yet lively while stimulating the imagination with its future potential. Hints of cocoa, lavender and current leaf linger, seeming to last for well over a minute. Color impressed me.

Dried red cherry, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet spice are all nicely lifted in this sublime, delicate Barolo. All the elements fall into place so effortlessly. The 2018 naturally does not have the body of more important years, but it offers tons of persistence and fine balance. It has closed down quite a bit since I first tasted it a few months ago, which is probably a good sign. An opened bottle just got better and better over time.

When young these wines have vanilla-scented, smoky, woody aromas or a hint of torrefaction, combined with suggestions of red fruits and spices. After a few years the nose becomes vegetable or animal, with scents of mushrooms, truffles or woodland undergrowth. The great complexity of the bouquet makes this a wine both rich and feminine; fat and mellow, with fine, delicate and fairly supple tannins. € 1.512,50 NO VAT (private collection)Add to cartThe 2015 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is magical. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from Arione, so the 2015 is 80% Francia and 20% Arione. That marks a return to Monfortino as a multi-vineyard wine, which it mostly was until 1978, when the first Monfortino from Francia was made. The combination of sites works so well. I remember tasting the 2015 as separate components and seeing what exactly the Arione piece adds, and that is aromatic explosiveness, texture and breadth. Rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco and cedar lend complexity. More than anything else, though, I am blown away by how utterly delicious the 2015 is. Of course, the 2015 will be better in time, but its pedigree is plainly evident today. Roberto Conterno gave the 2015 just five years in cask, the shortest time in wood for any Monfortino in recent memory, maybe ever. Like most producers around the world, Conterno is thinking deeply about what the optimal period of time in oak is. As for the 2015, it is a flat-out stunner in every way.

€ 439,00 NO VAT (private collection)There’s something intriguing, alluringly dark, earthy – animal, even – yet floral and packed full of rich black fruits and exotic spices that defines the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto. This impresses with its cool-toned dark berries and minerals, complemented by bright acidity and sweet inner herbal tones. It’s not yet ready to reveal all of its charms, though it drops subtle hints each step of the way. A bitter twang keeps the expression lively and fresh, while grippy tannins saturate deeply and leave the palate aching with youthful tension, as notes of licorice, clove and a hint of ginger linger. What a wine!
