Winemaker Federico Buffi took me through a large portion of their vineyards, all located east and southeast of the Montosoli Hill. In recent years, the family has begun slowly replanting some of their oldest vines to maintain health in the vineyards and ensure a bright future for the winery. All of the family’s portfolio is made from Montosoli, with parcels that are contiguous and planted high in calcium carbonate soils. A large collection of marine fossils regularly found throughout the vineyard is located in the winery. The combination of Baricci’s northern location, soils, ventilating winds and traditional winemaking yields wines that are a model of purity and refinement, with a stern mineral core and lifting acidity. From the Rosso to the Riserva, this is one of the absolute top portfolios in all of Montalcino.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is youthfully inward and darkly floral with an herbal tinge and hints of crushed ashen stone that give way to vivid black raspberry and exotic spice. This is juicy and spry, with racy cherry-berry fruit and stimulating acidity that creates a sensation of boundless energy, even as a saturation of primary concentration settles in toward the close. The 2019 finishes with incredible length and youthful tension, leaving balsamic spice, sage and licorice notes lingering over a bed of dusty tannins.

Dark, dense and resonant, the 2016 is a wonderfully complete wine that will provide readers with decades of pure drinking pleasure. The 2016 is especially dark and brooding, and yet the tannins are incredibly polished to the point of being perceptible. In the glass, the 2016 is complete and regal, perhaps because of the super-classic blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Her 2016 Barolo is soft and sensual, but also quite hushed - as many wines are in this vintage in the early going. Medium in body with silky tannins and exceptional balance, the 2016 has so much to offer, but it is also going to require quite a bit of time to be at its very best. Just after bottling, the 2016 was more generous and rich, but it is decidedly closed today. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle before age ten, and even that will be early for a super-classic Barolo. Rose petal, mint, crushed flowers, anise and blood orange develop with time in the glass, but the 2016 is a Barolo for readers who can afford to be patient.
